Brighter Beginnings, A free programme of 6 workshops for parents of special needs children aged 0-8
“People don’t understand how hard it is at times – when you just want to sit in a room and scream. If you are smiling on the outside they think you are okay – they don’t see the struggling person inside.”
Brighter Beginnings is a series of six workshops for parents of a special needs child aged 0-8 years old. The workshop programme will help parents get the support they need for their children, and to know where they can support for themselves as carers.
It aims to give parents the confidence they need to make decisions about their child and know how to prepare for meetings with professionals and to communicate what they want for their child.
The workshops will also cover common parenting issues such as Understanding Sleep issues and strategies to help develop good sleep routines, and it will explore behaviour and top tips for encouraging positive behaviour. And there will be a session covering Money Matters which will help parents to understand what they are entitled to and how they can improve their finances.
Parents who have attended the workshops have said what a difference it has made. A Solihull parent who “I feel so much better about myself and more positive about how to look after my child and knowing what’s available to make my life easier. I don’t feel alone anymore – it’s quite comforting. It’s hard finding somebody who understands, and I’ve made a couple of friends through the workshops and we still contact each other if one of us is having a low day. Even if our children have different disabilities we can still help each other.”
