Free Training for Carers

We understand that in your caring role you may encounter situations you don’t feel prepared for. And that as your role changes, the skills you need to carry it out may change too. Our two free  training courses– First Aid For Carers and Moving and Handling the Person You Care For -will give you the skills you need to carry out your role safely and with confidence. Both courses are suitable whether you care for an adult or child.

First Aid For Carers

Sadly, older people and those with special needs can be particularly vulnerable to accidents and injuries. This course is for carers and parent carers who want to learn what to do in the event of an accident or emergency.

You will learn a range of practical skills for how to deal with injuries and illness, from treating a minor fall to a major head injury and how to look after someone who is fitting. You will also learn the technical skills and confidence to perform CPR.

Moving and handling the person you care for

Safe moving and handling is essential to making sure that you don’t injury yourself or the person you care for. Most common injuries carers experience are back injuries whereas the effects of accidentally mis-handling a loved one can lead to cuts, bruises or neck and shoulder injuries.

Return to work training courses for unpaid carers

Through a partnership through PeoplePlus, Birmingham Carers Hub can now offer additional free training courses to unpaid carers*. To fit into your caring role, you can study flexibly online or via distance learning with the support of a tutor once a week for drop-in sessions. The flexibility of the courses allows you to train around your current caring commitments while keeping your work-related skills up to date. *Conditions apply, find out more here.

Caring for Carers Dementia Support Training

Through a partnership with Crossroads, Carers can access  free dementia training to suit where they are on their individual caring journey. A greater awareness of dementia and the support available can help you and your family to deal with the everyday challenges that you may face. There are five different training modules for Carers to pick and choose from. Here you will find a summary of the dementia modules, under the current circumstances these will be delivered via Zoom to a maximum of six people. Find out more here.

Safe and Sound Course

Safe & Sound is a free six week course delivered by Disability Resource Centre and consists of a series of friendly, interactive workshops and activities that are aimed at enhancing life skills and wellbeing. As meeting face to face is not a possibility at the moment, the course will be delivered via Zoom.  Find out more here.
