Forward Carers’ charity partner, Kissing it Better has written a song for Carer Rights Day to highlight the plight of over 6.5 million unpaid carers in the UK. The theme of this year’s Carers Rights Day, celebrated on Thursday 24th November, is the Cost of Care.

Being a Carer to a family member or friend who has a disability, serious illness frailty or addiction comes at a cost. It can cause a cost to a carer’s own health and wellbing, the cost to their employment options and social life, not to mention the financial cost of caring which is now exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis.

According to research by Carers UK, family members caring round the clock for loved ones who are older, disabled or seriously ill are being plunged into debt and struggling to afford food and bills during the cost-of-living crisis. A survey by the charity of more than 12,400 current unpaid carers found that one in six (16%) are now in debt as they try to manage their monthly costs.

Jill Fraser, the chief executive officer of Kissing it Better was inspired to write the song after forming a partnership with Forward Carers, a not-for-profit organisation that supports carers locally and nationally.

Jill said: “Many people don’t see themselves as carers, but the lyrics of the song will make them realise that is indeed what they are and they may be missing out on vital financial and emotional support. That’s why, this year with household bills soaring, Carers Rights Day is more important than ever. Carers are often frantically busy people don’t find time to research what is on offer. I hope our song will succinctly deliver the message in a fun way.”

To lift the spirts of carers, Jill’s lyrics ‘With support from Forward Carers both in Walsall and in Brum, a carer’s life is less lonely and a happier brighter one,’ highlights that Carers are not alone and that there’s a range of support available.

The Carer Rights Day song intends to celebrate and raise awareness of the caring role, empower Carers with information about their rights in an accessible way and signpost them to local advice and support. The song is available to listen to on YouTube here.
